In fact, the name “Mysore” is derived from “Mahishasura.” A large statue of Mahishasura stands on Chamundi Hills, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
As a Shakti Peeth, the temple is also connected to the story of Daksha Yagna, where Goddess Sati immolated herself, and Lord Shiva carried her body in grief. When parts of her body fell on earth, they became sacred Shakti Peethas. At Mysore, her hair is believed to have fallen.
