Introduction
Located near the world-famous Ellora Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is revered as the twelfth and last Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The temple beautifully blends divine energy with exquisite Maharashtrian temple architecture, featuring red stone carvings, intricate pillars, and a five-tier shikhara. Despite being the smallest Jyotirlinga shrine, its spiritual power and peaceful aura attract devotees from all over India throughout the year.
Mythological Significance
The legend of Grishneshwar is associated with a devout woman named Kusuma, who worshipped a Shiva Linga daily by immersing it in a nearby pond. Out of jealousy, her husband’s first wife killed her son. Despite the tragedy, Kusuma’s unwavering faith pleased Lord Shiva, who revived her son and granted the boon of manifesting himself at that spot as Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga.
The name “Grishneshwar” means “Lord of Compassion”, symbolizing Shiva’s boundless mercy and love for his devotees.
