Mahakaleshwar Temple

About Mahakaleshwar Temple

The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain is one of the most revered temples of Shiva and holds a special place among the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Known as the “Lord of Time,” Mahakal is believed to be the only south-facing (Dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga, making it spiritually unique.

Located on the banks of the sacred Shipra River, this ancient temple attracts millions of devotees every year. Ujjain itself is one of the Sapta Puri (seven sacred cities) and is deeply connected with Hindu mythology and astronomy.

One of the most powerful rituals here is the Bhasma Aarti, performed early in the morning using sacred ash. Devotees believe that worshipping Mahakal frees them from the cycle of life and death and grants spiritual liberation.
