Dwarka Dham

đź“– Introduction

On the serene shores of the Arabian Sea in Gujarat lies Dwarka Dham, the ancient and holy city believed to be the kingdom of Lord Krishna. As one of the Char Dhams and a revered Sapta Puri (seven holy cities), Dwarka holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus. The magnificent Dwarkadhish Temple, dedicated to Krishna as the “King of Dwarka,” attracts devotees from across India and the world.

🌄 The Sacred Legend

According to Hindu mythology, after leaving Mathura, Lord Krishna established his capital in Dwarka, a golden city built on the western coast of India. It is believed that after Krishna’s departure to the divine realm, the city submerged beneath the sea — an event that continues to fascinate historians and spiritual seekers alike. The current Dwarka is said to stand on the remnants of that ancient city.

🏛️ Temple Architecture

The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir, stands tall with its stunning five-storey structure supported by 72 beautifully carved pillars. The Shikhara (spire) rises about 78 meters high and is crowned with a massive flag bearing the symbols of Sun and Moon, signifying Krishna’s presence till the end of time. The temple’s sanctum houses the black stone idol of Lord Krishna as Dwarkadhish, in a majestic royal posture.

đźš© Spiritual Importance

Dwarka is considered the westernmost Char Dham, alongside Badrinath, Puri, and Rameshwaram. A visit to all four is believed to lead to Moksha (liberation). The city also finds mention in ancient texts like the Mahabharata, Skanda Purana, and Bhagavata Purana.
